In this third session of this highly popular series, and in the middle of two top level visits by Indian leaders to China, Chris Devonshire-Ellis, Senior Partner of Dezan Shira & Associates will examine the implications of Sonia Gandhi’s meetings last month with Hu Jintao, the Tri-Lateral meetings India held with China and Russia in Harbin, and the forthcoming January State visit of Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, to Beijing. Also to be discussed, as the two countries seek closer economic and trading ties, are the re-emergence of some of the old trade routes between China and India, including details of new direct flight paths, sea port connections and overland routes now being re-forged between these two Asian giants, and an introduction of the cities to be affected by this re-opening of trade, which is set to quadruple by 2009.

Dharavi- a twilight zone of informal housing on its way to development

November 27th, 2007 - by 2point6billion.com

d2.jpg

Few days back we were discussing the pace with which Indians and Chinese are getting richer today and the differences in the have and have nots.Hence I thought of writing this article, an example that’s in stark contrast to big industrial empires that rule in Mumbai and on the initiatives of the state to improve the infrastructure and the well being of its people.

Today I am on DHARAVI, routinely referred to as “Asia’s largest slum” Which is actually not the case. Today Karachi’s Orangi Township has surpassed Dharavi.

Recollect dailies stating that Mexico City’s Neza-Chalco-Itza barrio has four times as many people.

If the day was quit clear and you were landing at Mumbai international airport, you would not miss, the slummers, spread over an area of 175 hectares! Dharavi, an economic unit, in its own, has over a million souls residing therein {18,000 people crowd into a single acre (0.4 hectare)}

Until the 19th century, this area was a mangrove swamp inhabited by Koli fishermen. When the swamp got filled (depriving the fisherman of livelihood) and later when the transformation of the island city of Mumbai city began thus providing newly drained marshes as space for new communities to move in. Hundreds of thousands came from Uttar Pradesh (north India), to work in textile industries. The Kumbhars came from Gujarat, north west part of India, to set up a colony of potters. Tamils, from the south, began to open tanneries. And what was the result: The state not having enough accommodation for the people , resulted in what exists today.

There is scarcity of every kind there. From housing, water supply- forget clean water, electricity and toilet facilities. The environments cant just be imagined by people like you and me …But then the statistics below also reveal the importance of the area in the economics of Mumbai:

-There have been textile and pottery industries, traditionally, and an increasingly large recycling industry. There are an estimated 15,000 single-room factories, manufacturing various things. You name it and Dharavi makes it. (more…)

Sonia Gandhi sees only one possibility Between India and China :Co-existence With Cooperation

October 29th, 2007 - by 2point6billion.com

Sonia Gandhi spoke at the Tsinghua University in Beijing, on 27th Morning. I was there to know what she had to say on the two nations and their levels of “Optimism and Cooperation”.

She had lots on the subject showing the direction in which India is strengthening its relations with China:

Here she goes:

…Prime Minister Wen Jiabao put it succinctly and if I may so,  with the great empirical precision that China is noted for, and I quote—”during the past 2200 years, for about 99% of the time we have devoted to friendly cooperation between our two countries.”…

…”l see optimism in both India and China today; optimism about the progress our countries can make, optimism about realizing our goals of development, optimism about the levels of cooperation we can reach, optimism…

India Briefing Magazine Launched

July 10th, 2007 - by 2point6billion.com

India Briefing Magazine LaunchedThe much anticipated India Briefing magazine and website was launched yesterday in Delhi by the consulting practice Dezan Shira & Associates. The firm, which has  published the well known sister publication China Briefing and a variety of books over the past eight years in China, has recently opened three India offices and is positioning itself as a Foreign Direct Investment boutique legal / tax practice specializing in China and India investments on behalf of international businesses, mainly in the manufacturing sector.

Chris Devonshire-Ellis, the firm’s founder and senior partner, commented “The launch of our new Indian business series demonstrates our commitment to the development of foreign direct investment into India and represents a significant investment by our practice in the future of India. Like China Briefing has for China, we hope that India Briefing will assist with educating the international business community concerning the legal and tax environment in India and will help facilitate trade into the country.”

India Briefing is a monthly magazine, and can be subscribed to on a complimentary basis. With an international readership, subscribers are sent the pdf full color link each month directly to their mailbox. Subscribers also receive access to all archived back issues as well as invitations to specific business events and book offers and discounts.

“We’ve found this works well” says Devonshire-Ellis. “It shows the global business community the strength of Dezan Shira & Associates as a practice, and demonstrates our professional legal and tax knowledge in a manner which is also educational. We’re not in a position of the global firms and Big Four and be fed business from corporate offices overseas, so we have to show our abilities via marketing and education. Both India Briefing & China Briefing are designed to do just that.”

India Briefing’s first issue deals with expatriate individual income tax in India and can be accessed here.
