Web Attacks Aimed at the United States, South Korea Expected

Jul. 9 – More cyber attacks on U.S. and South Korean government websites are expected to happen again today, according to a South Korean web security firm, AhnLab.

Last week, attacks aimed at business and government sites including the White House, Defense Department and the New York Stock exchange and the South Korea’s presidential Blue House and Defense Ministry were suspected to be coming from North Korea although this theory was also disputed by analysts.

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency has reported that North Korea could be behind the cyber attacks.

AnhLab told Reuters that based on the pattern of the previous attacks, the next attack could happen today at 6 p.m. and will target banks, government offices and other major sites. “The times and targets could change if a new strain of the computer virus is released,” the company said.

The cyber attacks came in the form of access requests from malicious software that clogged server response and made it difficult for real requests to come through.

If it is proven that the cyber attacks did come from Pyongyang, it would only worsen its already strained relations with the United States and South Korea. The hermit state has been raising tensions in the region because it has been regularly test firing its ballistic missiles despite global criticism and a UN ban.
