India’s Car Sales Jump 32 Percent


Feb. 9 – Indian domestic passenger car sales increased 32.28 percent to reach 145,905 units in January from 110,300 units during the same period last year, based on figures provided by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Motorcycle sales in January also increased by 43.69 percent to 650,633 units, compared with 452,809 units in the corresponding month last year. Two-wheeler sales also increased by 43.43 percent to 834,383 units from 581,729 units in January last year.

According to SIAM, the sales of commercial vehicles increased by more than two-fold during last month to 53,447 units from 23,154 units in 2009. Total sale of vehicles across all categories increased 44.94 percent to 11,14,157 units in January, against 7,68,698 units in the same month in 2009.

Indian auto sales have been robust due to its recovering domestic economy and government stimulus measures. Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest passenger car company accounting for more than 50 percent of the domestic car market, has released a humorous advertising campaign found here.
