Feb. 26 – India and Pakistan officials met in New Delhi for their first official talks since the 2008 Mumbai attacks stalled diplomatic relations.
The meeting tackled contentious issues between the two from water resources to territorial disputes to terrorism concerns. In particular, India focused on terrorism with its foreign secretary Nirupama Rao presenting dossiers of Mumbai attack suspects to Pakistan’s foreign secretary Salman Bashir.
Pakistani Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir was quoted by the Telegraph as saying that “the only way forward is to engage meaningfully across the board, and not hold the relationship hostage” on the issue of terrorism.
India and Pakistan have accused each other of not doing enough to stamp out terrorist activities. Diplomatic relations between the two neighbors have been tense; forcing each one to concentrate efforts on strengthening security along its shared borders. The meeting did nothing towards solving any issue but served more as a symbolic first meeting in efforts to rebuild trust. No date has been set for the next meeting.
