Jul. 15 – North Korean military commanders met with the U.S.-led United National Command today to begin talks over the March sinking of the South Korean naval vessel Cheonan.
The two sides met at the border truce village of Panmunjom in the demilitarized zone that has divided North and South Korea since 1953.
Following an extensive investigation, the South Koreans, with the assistance of several nations including the United States, accused the North of firing a torpedo at the Cheonan, sinking the vessel and killing 46 sailors. The North has vehemently denied these allegations.
Thursday’s talks were between U.S. Colonel Kurt Taylor and North Korean Colonel Pak Ki-Yong. The two are intend to make arrangements for a later meeting between generals.
