Beijing Floods Leave Chinese Government with Credibility Crisis

Jul. 27 – In the aftermath of the worst rainstorm to hit China‚Äôs capital in the last six decades, there has been widespread anger against the Chinese government, which is accused of censoring the death toll. The death toll was previously reported to be 37, however, after a public outcry, Chinese authorities increased this number to 77 after claiming that mudslides made investigation and verification difficult. The rainstorms affected nearly 2 million people and caused approximately US$1.6 billion in damage, according to China’s state-run news outlet Xinhua. Report: China Top Economy in 2020, India in 2050

India, currently boasting the fourth-largest economy in the world in terms of purchasing power parity, will become the largest by 2050, according to the 2012 edition of The Wealth Report released this week by global property firm Knight Frank and Citi Private Bank. U.S. National Security Advisor to Visit China, India

The Obama Administration is sending its National Security Adviser Thomas E. Donilon to pay diplomatic visits to Beijing and New Delhi this week, the White House announced on October 18.
