China and India Entangled in Energy Dispute in the South China Sea

In a worrying development this week, China and India have become embroiled in a dispute regarding energy exploration in the South China Sea. India affirmed this week that it is willing to militarily counter any aggression in the disputed SCS to guard its economic interests. Chinese Activists Arrested by Japan, Territorial Tensions Increase

Aug. 18 – Sino-Japanese relations have again hit a roadblock this week with the arrest of 14 Chinese activists who were protesting the ownership of an island claimed by both countries. On Wednesday, pro-Chinese activists landed on the disputed Diaoyu Islands, or Senkaku Islands in Japan, attempting to plant a flag claiming Chinese ownership. Soon after, they were arrested by the Japanese Coast guard, who retains administrative control over the islands. China and India to Jointly Explore Overseas Energy Assets

Jun. 20 – China’s largest energy firm, China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), and India’s flagship oil and gas explorer, Oil and Natural Gas Corp. (ONGC), have signed an agreement to jointly explore potential energy assets overseas. China and India hope to combine their financial resources and expertise to better secure energy supplies for their rapidly-expanding economies. This is not the first time there has been cooperation between China and India’s chief oil producers. In 2006, CNPC and ONGC agreed to a series of pacts covering all segments of the oil industry.
