Chinese Troops Getting “Battle Ready” In Yunnan
Feb. 27 – The Chinese state news agency Xinhua has reported that Chinese troops have been undergoing intensive training near Yunnan’s border with Myanmar as fighting intensifies between Myanmar’s Government forces and the Kachin separatists. Some military shells have already landed in West Yunnan, leading China to step up its surveillance of the deteriorating situation. Burmese civilians in the region have apparently been seeking shelter from family and friends in Yunnan to escape the fighting. India’s Singh Visits Myanmar to Discuss Trade, Connectivity and Energy
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held talks and signed a slew of agreements with Myanmar’s President Thein Sein on Monday. Singh’s visit marked the first time an Indian leader has traveled to the strategically located country in 25 years.

Myanmar to Allow Foreign Banks Market Access
May 21 – The Myanmar government has brought forward the date of permitting foreign banks access to the country by 12 months, Nay Aye, one of the two deputy governors at the country’s central bank said on Friday. Banks from the ASEAN region will be allowed to set up operational branches by 2014, while banks from other countries will be able to establish joint ventures within the same time-frame, he was reported as saying.

Myanmar to Lift Global Payment Restrictions
Move will boost ability for businesses to buy and sell May 15 – Myanmar will lift its existing restrictions concerning international payments and transfers by the end of this year, according to the International Monetary Fund, making it easier for businesses to trade in and with the country. The government is expected to finalize the unification of the existing system of multiple exchange rates also by this time, following the Central Bank’s decision to scrap the 35-year-old fixed exchange rate last month.
