Japanese-South Korean Relations On the Rocks
On Friday, Japan recalled its ambassador to South Korea after President Lee Myung-bak made an unprecedented visit by a sitting president to disputed islands in the Sea of Japan. The rocky outcrop of islands, known as Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan, are claimed as sovereign territory by both governments and is believed to contain vast deposits of natural resources. North Korea Agrees to Freeze Nuclear Program
North Korea announced on Wednesday its intentions to freeze nuclear weapons tests and uranium enrichment, while allowing UN inspectors to monitor its nuclear facilities. The unexpected development came after diplomatic talks between U.S. and North Korean officials in Beijing last week, and will raise hopes of finding a lasting resolution to the issue of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch has conducted a survey of chief financial officers from mid-to-large sized Asian companies for the first time in the annual survey’s 14-year history. Dec. 2 – The latest issue of DPRK Business Monthly is now available for complimentary download. The regular magazine looks at current international, domestic, and peninsular affairs concerning North Korea while also offering commentary and tourism information on the country. In recent international news, Victor Ishayev, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s envoy for the Far East, has said that the DPRK will earn US$100 million annually if it becomes a transit country for Russian gas supplies to South Korea.
